(Jacob stands on a chair a noose around his neck Judas stands behind him)

Judas

You did this to yourself.

Jacob

No I didn’t the world id this to me.

Judas

You didn’t have to listen.

Jacob

I was weak I didn’t mean to…

Judas

Betray them. But you did. Its Jacob’s flaw we all do it eventually.

Jacob

But once I started I couldn’t…

Judas

Stop. Why would you? What could you possibly gain?

Jacob

Well this ends now. (starts to step off the chair)

Judas

Wait….don’t you want to see how you ended up in the noose before you use it.

Jacob

No….I just want it to end.

Judas (flips the Jacob a piece of silver)

Humor me will you.

Jacob

What is this?

Judas

It’s a piece of silver.

Jacob

What is it for?

Judas

It’s a reminder from me.  Remember…

(As Judas says remember the lights shifting revealing the Jacob at a younger age he is arguing with his mother)

Mother

I’m not giving you any more Jacob.

Jacob

Just a little Mom I just need a little more. It will work out this time.

Mother

Like it did the last time. Jacob you have a problem you need to stop.

Jacob

My only problem is that I’m broke.

Mother

I can’t to see you like this. You need help.

Jacob

What would you know about help. I owe these men money mom. If the don’t get it…

Mother

Then go to the police.

Jacob

I can’t go to the police. Don’t you love me mom. Do you want them to hurt me.

Mother

Of course I love you Jacob. I just….

Jacob

Than give me the damn money.

Mother

No I can’t I’m sorry (mother leaves).

(Jacob looks at her pocket book. Struggles for a moment than goes through it taking out a wad of cash)

Jacob (looking offstage)

I love you Mom it’ll be different this time.

(The lights shift to the Jacob standing on a chair a noose around his neck> Judas shakes his head in mock disgust)

Judas

Money really is the root of all evil isn’t it Jacob.

Jacob

I had no choice they were going to kill me.

Judas

There’s always a choice Jacob.

Jacob

You don’t understand. I was in trouble I….

Judas (suddenly angry)

I don’t understand money troubles Jacob. Why the hell do you think I….(regains his composure).  The choice was yours.

Jacob

I tried asking…

Judas

But you couldn’t accept no for an answer.

Jacob

It caused so much trouble.

Judas

It usually does.

Jacob

Why didn’t I stop?

Judas

Because you’re human.

Jacob

That’s not an excuse.

Judas

It’s the best excuse.

Jacob

Why?

Judas

We’re imperfect He made us that way. It didn’t stop there though did it Jacob…shall we take a look (Judas flips Jacob another silver coin as he catches it the lights shift and come up on a slightly older Jacob)

Melissa

You promised you’d stopped.

Jacob

Its just one more job. I owe the guy a favor.

Melissa

You could get arrested or killed.

Jacob

I won’t. I’ll be careful.

Melissa

What is so damn important that you would risk everything?

Jacob

He helped me out when no one else would.

Melissa

Helped you out?

Jacob

He forgave some debts…its not important. Let’s just say I owe him.

Melissa

What about me? Don’t you think you owe me?

Jacob

It’s not the same. Melissa

Melissa

Not the same Jacob. I stood by you when nobody would. I didn’t listen when they said you couldn’t change. (softly) Maybe I should have.

Jacob

Please…don’t.

Melissa (holding)

I’m just scared Jacob. Scared to death.

(The lights shift back to Jacob standing on the chair Judas next to him)

Judas (sarcastically)

How very honorable of you Jacob.

Jacob

I owed him. I gave my word.

Judas

Was it worth it?

Jacob

Yes.

Judas

Losing everything to keep you word?

Jacob

My word was all I had.

Judas

But didn’t you give Melissa your word.

Jacob

That’s different…

Judas

Didn’t you promise her you’d stop.

Jacob

I had I just had to finish one last thing…

Judas

There was always one last thing Jacob.

Jacob

I needed to finish it.

Judas

But you knew it wouldn’t be finished.

Jacob

Please just let me end this. (starts to step off)

Judas

Oh no its just getting interesting. Your word it didn’t last long did it Jacob (presses a piece of silver into his hand. The lights shift to Jacob shackled to a chair. An angry officer looms above him)

It is interesting. I'm okay with not knowing yet. The dialogue could belong to anyone and be compelling. At the begining of a play, well, you got in late, in the middle of action, and that's where I like a play to start. No once upon a times.

I am struggling where to go with this piece and unfortunatley school is once again in session. So I believe it may have to be shelved and marinated for a bit.
