HEY LADIES!  WE WANT YOUR PLAYS!]

Live Girls! theater in Seattle Washington is seeking plays by women for our 2009 season.

All submissions must be submitted by Sept 15th, 2008 to be considered for 2009.

WE ARE SEEKING:

* 10-minute plays for our annual festival of shorts, "Quickies"
Plays submitted for Quickies may have had previous productions but new works are encouraged.

* Unproduced plays for our new play development series, "The Bakery"
Plays submitted for the The Bakery series will receive a public reading. We are interested in both one-act and full-length plays and will accept proposals for plays currently in development.

* Additionally, if you are submitting one of the above and you also have a full-length, completed script that you would like us to consider for full production, you may send a synopsis for our perusal.  The synopsis should be one page maximum and include cast breakdown. If it seems like it might fit our season, will request the full script.  Please note that we only produce two full-length scripts a year and make an effort to prioritize local playwrights, so opportunities for full production are limited.

THE FINE PRINT!

*  Please send all submissions to  submissions@livegirlstheater.org

* In the body of your email please introduce yourself!  We are always excited about meeting new playwrights! You may also include: your bio as a playwright or resume, and any previous production history for plays submitted

* Playwrights may submit up to 3 plays total, or 2 plays and one synopsis

* Plays submitted should be sent as attachments in MS Word or PDF format

* Keep in mind we are a small theater taking the risk to produce new works; and probably can't accommodate large casts or long lists of tech requirements.

* If you are submitting a proposal for The Bakery,  please include another writing sample of your work along with your proposal.

* All submissions will receive a reply within 3 months of the date submitted

Looking forward to reading your work!

Best,
Joy Brooke Fairfield

Whipped them off an e-mail query to find out more information and whether they offer remuneration. As yet, no response.

I have to say, I do think Theatre Maven has a very valid point. Any submission call asking for plays from “Guys Only” would be garroted. Personally, I’m against any all groups that call for submissions from a particular ethnic/gender/sexual orientation/socio/economic group. I think festivals of plays or collections of plays based around a theme are terrific, but if you feel you can write an interesting, affecting, purposeful play about the genocide in Rwanda, I don’t think you need be Rwandan to do it.

At the end of the day, I just don’t feel comfortable with segregation – inflicted or self-inflicted.

Wanted Plays for white male, middle age, middle income only audience!

Plays should be specific to and written by and for the following –

  • White (at least third generation) middle income males.
  • Of average weight (no fatties please)
  • Of average height (strictly 5’ 11” to 6’)
  • 47 to 48 year old authors only. (proof of age may be requested)
  • Black or very dark brown hair only (absolutely no baldies, wigs or toupees) any writers who have brown hair should be aware that only very, very dark brown will be entertained.
  • Please no subjects relating to or writers who are; homosexual, bisexual, multi-sexual, transvestite, trans-gender, transsexual, or transparent.
  • The play can be a comedy or drama though preferably neither and only mildly entertaining if at all.
  • Please keep the character numbers somewhere between 1 and 2 and remember that they will all be 47 ish year old male Caucasians with limited vocabulary and no stage presence.

The play should be about inclusion and tolerance…………

Sorry no offence to posters or readers, I just couldn’t help myself. I do find it interesting to ponder just when being exclusive becomes excluding? And why it is ok to exclude some groups and not others?

Ultimately, honestly I don’t care. If someone wants to exclude me from their event then I think that is their right. I am in favour of private members clubs in London keeping their all male membership rule. I am in favour of women only health clubs.

I am in favour of people having the freedom to do what they want. I will only be offended if I choose to be, and I choose not to be.

I guess my rule here is ‘do no harm’. Excluding me from a ‘women only’, ‘black only’ or ‘left handed Welsh speaking lesbian only’ play festival does me no harm.

Nuff said

Regards

perry

How about those requests for plays by playwrights living in Georgia, California, Arizona, England, etc? Lots of those. And what about playwrights under forty or student playwrights only?

Lots of specificity going on and I think theater companies have the right to limit submissions, including for men only, if that's what they really want.

But if they ever request plays written by elderly white-haired women five feet eight, weighing 128-130 and living in Northern Calfornia, I hope somebody will let me know.

Shirleyk, you sound absolutely lovely. Playful Perry, you do, too.

Me, I’m just a mischievous old rabbit, belonging to some of the above groups, not to others, wishing we were all one – playwrights - sharing our experiences on planet earth.

And ultimately, we are.

Divide and conquer?

Not me. I’ll keep thrashing away with my scythe, firm in my belief that the only path to universality is through individuality. The singular experience of living is our common bond. Breaking away is breaking apart.
