CALL FOR PAPERS

DEADLINE: 1 SEPTEMBER 2008 (email submission)

INTERNATIONAL ANGLOPHONE THEATRE

The Academic Anglophone Society of Romania invites contributions for a forthcoming Special Issue of its periodical ABC on the topic of “International Anglophone Theatre.”

The contemporary world theatrical canon includes many examples of Anglophone playwriting by playwrights with connections beyond Anglophone countries; and of non-Anglophone texts in English translation and adaptation. Recent examples include Rock’n’Roll, an epic examination of twentieth-century Czech history by Czech-born British playwright Sir Tom Stoppard, directed, in Romanian translation, by Andrei Serban; the international hit Waxing West, a play in English by New York-based Romanian playwright Saviana Stanescu; the current Broadway revival of British playwright Christopher Hampton’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses, adapted from the French novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos; and Nigerian-British playwright Biyi Bandele-Thomas’s Oronooko, adapted from the novel by Aphra Behn.

How do these cross-currents between languages, cultures, and theatrical and literary decisions expand the canon of Anglophone drama? What traditions or concerns presently exist in “Anglophone” theatre, distinct from the theatrical traditions of specific Anglophone countries or cities? How does movement between different languages, perspectives, and audiences change the adapted, translated, or produced text? And to which contemporary international Anglophone playwrights, translators, and theatre companies should the world theatre community pay close attention? These are a few of the questions that the Special Issue in International Anglophone Theatre may consider.

We seek:

  • Research articles

  • Theatre and Performance reviews

  • Interviews with theatre practitioners and/or theorists
relevant to the following topics:

  • International playwrights – contemporary and earlier – writing in English

  • Non-anglophone plays in English translation

  • English-language plays in translation

  • Cross-currents in Anglophone and non-Anglophone theatre

Please ELECTRONICALLY submit articles, interviews, and script extracts, in Word format only, by 1 September 2008, to:

with ABC SUBMISSION in the subject-line.

ABC an international, peer-reviewed journal that seeks to explore cross-disciplinary developments in Anglophone Studies in the changing environment forged by digital media, advanced technology and the global condition.

ABC’s primary goal is to contribute fresh angles to the academic subject of English by promoting shape-changing research across conventional boundaries. As well as providing innovative approaches to influential crosscurrents in current thinking, the journal sets out to connect work by scholars conducting advanced research in the theoretical humanities. By virtue of its variegated profile and of the intercultural dialogue it aspires to stage, ABC examines Anglophone studies in a multi-disciplinary perspective.
