Hello everyone,
I wanted to join this forum basically to start to get an idea of what playwrights are talking about these days, and what kind of work is being made. I'm not a typical playwright: I don't write for a living and even if I had the opportunity I don't think I would. Writing for me is a beautiful outlet that keeps me sane. My first passion is Architecture and Design, which is what I'm majoring in at Syracuse University, and indeed it needs escape quite often due to the extreme investment of time and energy it requires.
However, my little outlet has become more than I ever expected it to be. In my second year at Syracuse University I had the opportunity to co-found a Theater group entirely run by students (who aren't majoring in Drama). We're called 'WhAT' (Warehouse Architecture Theater). With the lovely cushion of school funding (allowing us to focus on production value and not financial value...), I've had the wonderful opportunity to write, direct, cast, act, and work with such administrative aspects as finding a venue, writing out contracts, getting a solid technical staff...etc. So far I've been blessed to see four of my plays produced (3 one acts and 1 full length play), and I've been involved in nearly 20 other productions. Using theatre as an outlet actually became such an escape that I may have spent more time invested in it than Architecture last semester, as I had my first full length play produced (I was a co-director), I sang in a Cabaret, acted in series of one acts, and did Set Design for the Drama Department's production of 'Equus'.
I'm also somewhat of a 'drama minor with benefits', as I've been allowed into several 'drama majors only' classes due to my unique theatrical experience. I'll be in London in the coming semester, and in addition to taking my core Architecture classes, I'll be taking a majors-only drama course where we'll be attending professional theatrical productions every week (first 6 rows only!) and heavily critiquing/analyzing their value.
Basically, I love to create! I look forward to participating in this community and learning as much as I can from every one here!

kinkabobba,
In several theatre/movie writing workshops I have taken over the years, I at first was amazed, but now have become accustomed to, architects, engineers and doctors who had enrolled in the classes. The two fundamental commonalities we discovered as we would speak were creativity and STRUCTURE. All of us share the interest in how something is built, and why it works. So, you are very welcome to this Forum and "Build away!"
best,
