Hi, I'm Matt from Portland, OR. I've been writing and directing for over 20 years, but not really in the professional arena. Now I'm wanting to get serious about my creative ambitions (writing, directing, and producing) and go from hobbyist to professional. My mentor gave me some advice: looking beyond Portland for my audience. Pointed me to this website and some others. I try to write bold and unusual works that will hopefully challenge an audience in various ways.
Well, because I'm a writer, I could make this much, much longer, but I probably shouldn't. Hope to meet some good people and have some interesting conversations. Thank you.
Well, it's a little embarrassing to tell, to be honest. Always wanted to start a theatre company (who doesn't?) but never had the know-how or connections. So I pulled some people from a couple plays I did, got them interested, we incorporated, but then I realized I still lacked a lot of info on how to run an organization like that (putting cart before horse is a great skill of mine), so I needed to take time to learn (which I'm still in process) and all those people went away. So yes, new, and yes, regrouping.
I started my theater over 20 years ago and we're still going strong. When I started my theater, my total theatrical experience was a very small role in Oklahoma! Seemed like more fun that working for a living (although I work far more hours than when I had a "real" job).
Never-the-less, it is more fun than working for a living so don't give up!!!
