|I'm a veteran of musical theatre, having spent the past twelve years playing in pit bands for several local theatre groups, as well as acting in various other capacities (including acting) for pretty much my entire life. I've also been fortunate to get to Broadway to see several shows each season. I have a particular fondness for "cult" musicals - those that may not appeal to a wider audience but still attract loyal and devoted followings, largely due to their judicious use of irony and humor.
A few years ago, I started writing a musical parody based on a well-known horror book and movie. I got derailed for a while due to some personal situations that had come up, but a few months ago I returned to the project with the intention of finally getting it finished. But I find that trying to write the book, the lyrics, AND the music has become too much of a load to take on myself; I don't feel like I can trust my own judgment anymore as to whether the damn thing's still funny. I'm sort of stuck at about 40% complete at this point. I've put a lot of craft and effort into what's written so far, as I have a particular passion about recognizing what constitutes theatrical conventions and then sort of perverting them.
I'm at the point where I feel the work would benefit so much more from having a kindred spirit with whom to work. I'd prefer someone with strong musical ability to help craft the music, especially someone who's familiar with conventional musical cliches and has no problem sending them up (think P.D.Q. Bach, only much less sophisticated).
So if you're looking to collaborate on a musical comedy and might be interested, please feel free to request a rough draft of my treatment. Or if you have any inclination toward passing a little advice along to a first-time writer (aside from "Don't waste your time" - I have no intention whatsoever on giving up), please feel free to contact me as well.
Edit: That is, feel free to PM me and I'll send you some of what I have. Guess I should have put that in the body somewhere.
