Dear Members,

An actual website that was added to the old thread caused it to no longer function as the text and artwork went beyond the margins.  So I have started a spanking new thread.

So continue Spreeing!  We're almost home!  Next stop: acceptances and productions!

Thanks.

What did you write today?

Oh - I bet I did it in with PLaywright's Center Opps - sorry.! I noticed it weirded out on me when I posted it (although there are good opps there).  Will not copy and paste the opps any more.

Will report tomorrow - am immersed in elections and work - which means I cannot think clearly about either.

Day #22 maybe:

I submitted "Hong Kong Phooey Hustle" to Outsider's Inn Collective.  They say you must write for guidelines, but here's the link:

http://www.outsiders-inn.com/contact_us.htm

I also went through some of Edd's links to links and found The National New Play Network.  From there, I found Mixed Blood Theatre, dedicated to works of pluralism, and wrote a query and sent 10 sample pages (the Spanglish script for "Crappy at Yoga").

This leads me to a question.  If a theater states in their mission that they are dedicated to new work by new playwrights, but does not address whether they are currently seeking scripts or even queries, do you sometimes just go ahead and send them something, or is that taboo?

DAY #24  Don't give up now folks.  Only six more days to go.

(Claudia, I'm still trying to come up with something by Sunday.  This election has kept my mind occupied for the last month.  Maybe now I can recoup the concentration needed to write.)

Today I'm mailing Desert Devils to the NUFAN Ensemble.  I know nothing about them.  Their website is of no help.

NUFAN Ensemble, CH, deadline 12/15, no fee
The n.u.f.a.n ensemble is accepting scripts for their 2007 season.
Scripts must not have ever received a full production.
Please send two hard copies and a resume to
Paul Barile 4261 W. Addison Apartment One
Chicago, IL 60641 (No email)
Deadline December 15.

I sent a query letter to Greg at Outsiders Inn Collective (I love the name of the group) to see what kind of plays they were seeking.

I shall let you know what I hear, if anything.

Here's an opp. from Chicago Craigslist--you do need to travel there if selected, but many of you are closer to Chicago than I am.  (I would just like to note that I find their final line about no compensation a little annoying):

New Play Submissions-Hypatia Theatre Company

Reply to: newplays@hypatiatheatre.org
Date: 2006-11-03, 2:02PM CST

Hypatia Theatre Company is looking for new plays to produce during a week long Symposium around Valentine's Day 2007. Four plays will be chosen for workshop production in February of 2007, and one lucky piece will receive full production later in the year.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Playwrights must be based in Chicago(or willing to pay for your own travel during the week of the festival)
2. The plays must be un-produced.
3. Plays should be emailed to newplays@hypatiatheatre.org as Word or PDF files.
4. If you must send a hard copy, please mail (with a cover page) to:
HTC New Play Symposium
c/o Caitlin Parrish
4662 N. Rockwell
Chicago, IL
60625
5. All pieces must have numbered pages.
6. No translations of others' work/musicals/plays that require more than 6 actors.
7. Content, form, and length are up to you.
8. Hypatia DEVELOPS new plays. Production will include intense table work and revision involving a director, a dramaturg, and a cast. You must be willing to allow for changes to your script.
9. The subject matter is Love. That's a broad topic. Do with it what you will.
10. And most importantly, plays must in some way adhere to the mission of Hypatia Theatre Company. Playwrights should check out http://www.hypatiatheatre.org for the info.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: December 25th, 2006

For more information, go to http://www.hypatiatheatre.org or email newplays@hypatiatheatre.org

  • this is in or around Chicago, IL
  • [size=+0]no -- it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
  • Compensation: Our belief is that getting your play produced trumps a lump cash prize. So, no actual dollars.

Well, I live in Boston, so I can't go, anyway, but that line about production trumping payment is ridiculous.  Aren't THEY making money off the play? Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I'm with Sue on "production trumping payment."  And I am not against "no payment to writer."  I submit many times to those calls when I feel it is mutually beneficial and there is respect on both sides.  Some of the "no payment to writer" has been very helpful.  I just don't like the arrogance of the statement though.

So, I have been immersed in election day stuff - I did feel for the USA it was ana important election and I couldn't always concentrate on writing or submitting.

But I did:  (Thanks to Edd) send BOX OFFICE to Stolen Fire (with nice reply - it is so very nice when they acknowledge you, isn't it?).  I am not sure it is "arty" enough.  They are looking for different length plays and are at:  Stolen Fire, 1585, Chitton St., Arroyo Grande, CA  93420 and they accept e-mail submissions:  stolenfire@fix.net.

I also sent (thanks to Nina):  The Blank Theatre Co.; 1301 Lucile Ave.; Los Angeles, CA  90026. E-mail submission at:  info@theblank.com

They want:  logline for play (really brief synopsis?), character list setting, then the first ten pages of dialogie and the last ten pages.  Which brings me to happy news as I submitted BY CANDLELIGHT to them and now I need to withdraw BY CANDLELIGHT from a lot of places as I heard yesterday that it is a finalist in the Bonderman Play Writing Workshop.  I was a semi-finalist two years ago - which meant I went to the conference free but paid my own way.  And they presented 15 minutes of CAST AWAY IN TIME.  I learned so much at the conference regarding playwriting, editing, realities and such that is worthwhile to get myself there.  This year, they are bringing me to Indianapolis and supplying me with a dramaturg, a director, cast and admin support.  It is a dream come true (and you know - I'm terrified - absolutely terrified).  I write in a room with pets - that I speak to incessantly - and you never know.  This play has my heart and the fact that I will have help in a way I have never had help before - is certainly wonderful.  For those of you who do not know The Bonderman - they develop what they hope will be excellent youth theatre plays or play for young audiences.  They are passionate about it, learned and when the plays are presented, they bring in young audiences to also guage the play.  Anyway ... I am going on and on.  Happy submitting.  Dreams come true - even iof it takes 14 years.

WEATHER REPORT:  (Because it helps my mood)  70 degrees in MN.  Winter returns tomorrow.  All my windows are open.  Time to write!

Thanks, Claudia, for the Stolen Fire info! (I wish I could write today. I'm entirely bored at work.) I did write to them and sent a produced one-act play. HOWEVER, I explained to them that the production had been entirely different than I had anticipated (it was as if I were seeing another writer's play) and asked that it be given another chance, as it were (they want pieces that are at least 20 minutes, and this is the only one I have). I'll let you know what they say. It's worth a try, anyway.

And yes, I DO need to write a longer piece. I know. ;-)

First, congradulations, Claudia, for getting accepted to the Bonderman Play Writing Workshop!  That sounds like a fantastic experience.

I've been getting a little behind in submissions, but have recently submitted:
"Look Mom, I Got a Job" to Asphalt Shorts (it would work nicely in a park-like area)
"ReFUSION" to The 7th Sign and Stolen Fire
"Ace of Diamonds" (mystery) to Heuer Publishing

Right now I'm at 23 submissions, so only one day behind!

Morning all and thanks to Paddy. I've sent my ten minute play Pideons in the Park off to the Asphalt Jungle Shorts this morning.

Picture still bleak here in Oze and I'm afraid I can't add to the submission ops at all.

That is an enticing opp indeed.  Seems as though it would be well-worth the time to write one to fit their specifications, doesn't it?  There's plenty of time before the deadline.

I just got a VERY nice email back from Gregory at the Outsiders Inn Collective (they are seeking full-length and one-act plays), so I sent him "Uncharted Territory" (my only one-act play; God, I really need to write another one). I also heard sent it to stolen fire, b/c, although the play WAS produced, it was produced VERY BADLY and I feel it deserves another chance.

Fingers crossed.

BTW, Outsiders Inn Collective is doing Suzan-Lori Park's 365 day project. I went to Mount Holyoke College with her and she was my radio station intern. And just look, I am almost famous as she is now. *guffaw*

I sent "Hong Kong Phooey Hustle" off to Stolen Fire (btw, did you all read those links and letters on the website about the "death of theater"?  It's a harrowing tale.)

I wrote a 2-minute play for a director's winter showcase--she requested this, though I'm not a shoe-in.  The play--"They Call Me Heat Miser"--was an attempt to satisfy her myriad of requirements, but I've never done a 2-minute play, so it's on the "Critique My Play" link.  Soon, I'll submit it to her, hopefully within the confines of this spree.

Someone in my theater group, The StageSlingers, has just asked me to get a holiday script together for a production, so I'm also dusting off my old "Hanukkah Elephant" piece for a show.

Ohhh, I have something for Boston ( not ready -working with some talented teens on this one).  Who knows?

Sent a SASE to:  Puffin FOundation, Ltd.; 20 East Oakdene Ave.; Teaneck, NJ  07666-4111

You must write for guidelines (hence the SASE).  They fund (small - $500$1,000) grants for people outside of the mainstream of society (minority, gay, political views).  SO I vote - I am apparently out of the mainstream -  and as said before - you never know!  Having a great week.  Right now, feel very lucky to work as I do.  Hope your submissions bring you hope and productions!

Today I am sending a copy of my one act verse play, Aquarius: Redacted, to Bug Theatre in Denver, CO.

I had earlier queried the Bug about sending a play. Today I received word back to send my submission to 3654 Navajo Street, Denver, CO 80211. After visiting the theatre's web site I sent the play the attention of Donna Morrison, Executive Artistic Director.

Was music teacher today.  At least I read music.  Went over submission opps from all the usual haunts and was coming up blank - so went back to the first thread to see what I missed when I was biology teacher for a week and came up with:

http://fourthwallproductions.com/email.html

They want contemporary - maybe social issues and they had said one-acts.  My social issue plays are ten-minutes, so I did send on spec:  EXPENSIVE ACCOUNTING and THE BURNING BUILDING.

Freezing again.  Gotta love global warming.  But having a very good week.  Hope you are also.  And oh - happiness:  My intention was to send 20 submission via this binge and I am up to 19!  Have a great weekend.

This sounds like a fun one from Chicago Craigslist.  I sent them "Hong Kong Phooey Hustle", "Not What Not to Wear", and "They Call Me Heat Miser".  (Strange little note at the end about how copyright law prohibits payment to the playwright).

MOB seeks 10-15 Plays

Reply to: gigs-232369973@craigslist.org
Date: 2006-11-09, 10:38AM CST

MOB productions is pleased to announce its First Free FanFiction Festival!

We're looking for a few good (or at least devoted) writers to either
adapt an extant piece of their own Fanfic for the stage or to write a
new piece (again, for the stage) to be performed at a staged reading
for a bunch of drunk Chicagoans.

We are looking for
General Fiction
Slash Fiction
Mary-Sue Fiction
And
Smut

Based on your favorite TV show/Movie/Cartoon/Comic Book/Novel or a
combination of all five.
Works should be no more than 15 minutes in length and require no more
than five actors (double casting is possible).

Entries will be read and chosen for production by the MOB staff.

Send submissions to mobproductions@gmail.com by November 30, 2006.
Multiple submissions are fine, both straight plays and musicals will
be considered.

MOB productions is a not for profit theatre company based in Chicago, IL.

MOBifesto

We are inundated with the trappings of Pop Culture from the moment we
wake up in the morning to the moment we go back to sleep at night. Pop
Culture rides the El to work with us, it looks benevolently down on us
from billboards, and it beckons us with its siren song through the
Internet when were supposed to be using the computer to do our jobs.
And thats fine.
Pop Culture is designed to appeal to a mass audience, and it succeeds
magnificently. Pop Culture provides us with a commonality that
reaches across socio-economic borders, a shared culture, an oral
history disseminated through the media. Critics claim that Pop Culture
saps us of our individuality; in its mass appeal it homogenizes the
masses.
The fine arts, on the other hand, cater to the individual. Every
person brings his or her own background, knowledge and critical school
of thought to a painting, a symphony or a work of live theatre.
Theatre, specifically, is molded by the viewer. A live production
changes every night depending on the make-up and mood of its audience.
No matter how much you yell at your TV you will not affect it.
At MOB we understand the schism between fine art and pop culture. We
have felt the sense of joy and shame derived from hotly debating the
results of last nights American Idol around the water cooler. We want
to take your shame away. At MOB we bring the intellectual history and
interactive forum of theatre to the pop cultural stories that we all
know.
MOBs productions present a local re-imagining of Pop culture. We tell
stories that examine the ways in which pop culture affects the way we
think and behave. We confront, challenge and celebrate our shared
media culture. But we cant do that without, well, a mob of
intelligent artistic people willing to actively engage in MOB
productions. Well provide the thought-provoking theatrical
productions and the supplementary web forums and community events. You
bring your passion and your brains. In short, were building a culture,
we need you to make it pop.

And, of course, if you make it to the show and are over 21, we'll buy you a shot.

I know, Edd, isn't that strange?  The only reasoning I can piece together is that it might have to do with the material on which the plays are based?  For example, is it copyright infringement to have a cartoon and a cartoon character featured in a play?

As you may have guessed, I have a personal investment in your response...

Morning all,

Australia is redeemed. I've just had a note from Adam Mitchell associate director of the Black Swan Theatre in Perth. This is one of our best main stage houses and Adam says that he is happy to accept full length work ( at least 60 minutes) either electronically at adam@bstc.com.au or in hard copy at Black Swan Theatre Company PO Box3232 Broadway PO Crawley WA 6009.

Adam says that he would prefer to receive material that has'already had a life off the page' and that work that would lend itself to an ensemble would be of particular interest His main interest is in producing contemporary work.

I'm sending him my full length play  Tiger Country.

The best Nic

Ack.

I'm too behind to catch up.  I started with good intentions, but I put in a sixty hour week last week, and barely had time to change my underwear.

Seems I've done another slip during this submission spree from playwright to producer...but I'm going to look now.

Thanks for all the Asphalt Jungle submissions.

Although I haven't contributed to the discussion, I have been submitting when I can find the time, and I appreciate the inspiration and motivation the discussion has provided.

BUT...is anoyone else as annoyed as I am that more than half of the places I submit to never respond in any way at all? I am the chair of the Baltimore Playwrights Festival and we make every effort to personally respond to every entrant and send them script evaluations which we hope will help them as they continue to work on their plays. That just seems like common courtesy to me, and it's missing from most of the places that I send plays to.

Very annoyed and disheartened and reconciled at this point, I guess.

Do you have a festival, Rich?

Greetings!

I think I've made the requisite number of submissions, but desperation pushes me onward.  I submitted "They Call Me Heat Miser" to a local director who requested a short play.

DAY #30

Today I sent out my final script for the Spree!  I hope all who have joined us in sending out your scripts have wonderful, fabulous and great success.  Now all there is to do is wait and report back with any news regarding your submissions.  I have no doubt that there will be some good news coming out of this spree.  Thank you for participating and I pray it gets all of us in the habit of sending out our work.  Nobody's going to come knocking on our doors asking for our latest script.  So keep writing, keep sending and keep faith in yourself!

Our next Spree begins Wednesday February 14th - St. Valentine's Day.

What did you write today?

On this final day I sent Desert Devils to the Black Swan Theater.  (NOTE: This is not the Australian Swan nor our favorite neighborhood Swan (where is she, by the way)), but to the Swan in North Carolina.

Black Swan Theater (founded, 1988) is putting out a call for new scripts. The process is this: every two months (this may go to once a month, depending on response and energy) Black Swan will arrange a reading of a new script or scripts before an audience, to which the playwright will be invited. Response sheets will be given to director, performers, and audience to aid in the development of the play, and an audio recording will be made for the playwright if he cannot be in attendance. Especially promising scripts will undergo further development at Black Swan and at Highland Repertory Theater (our professional partner in this endeavor) toward the end of possible full production.

No payment to the playwright during reading and development, but contracts negotiated for full productions.

Please mail (no e-mail submissions at this time) submissions (full length, one act, one person shows, musicals) to:

The Black Swan Theater
Attn: David Hopes
166 W. Haywood St, Ste 1
Asheville, NC 28801

swanthtre@aol.com - (inquiries only, no email submissions please)

Congratulations to Edd and anyone who sent out 30 plays! I couldn't--not enough places, after the other binge--but I got out at least 10, so that was okay. I think I will send "Uncharted Territory" to this theatre.

BTW, if you are reading this, Edd, I am trying to locate you, so please email me!!! :)

If I get in anywhere, I will make sure you all know. If I do not, I will not post it. I am trying to move away from the negativity.

Good luck to all!!!

This one looks like a lot of fun.  I think staging shows at a 7-11 is a cool idea!:

NOW SEEKING PLAY SUBMISSIONS: SEVEN.11 (2007)!
Seeking plays for the Seven.11 Convenience Theatre series, which takes seven, 11-minute plays, all set in a convenience store, and weaves them together to present an evening of entertaining quickies for all to enjoy.

All scripts must be 11 pages or less, in proper play format, with a max of three actors (role-doubling, however, is permitted) and set in a convenience store. No other requirements than to write something that challenges, defies, or just tells a darn good story. Each play should be able to stand alone; many of the plays from our previous seven.11's have had independent productions around the country. Last year 3 of the Seven.11 plays were nominated for the NYIT Awards for Best Short Play.

Some of the popular series stories included teen nerd club drama, Holi color antics, and an original pop musical that left us wondering 'Who killed Mr. Naidu first?".

Email submissions to: convenience@desipina.org

Or mail your play to:

Desipina & Co
520 8th Avenue
Suite 318
New York, NY 10018

Deadline: December 15, 2006 (must be received by, not postmarked!)

A full production in downtown NYC, scheduled for April 2007, and a modest, honorary stipend will be provided for chosen plays. Plus, an opportunity to learn more about the workshopping process, from start to final product! For further details on last year's production, visit: http://www.desipina.org .

Thanks, Nina. This sounds fun. I went to their website, and last year I think all of the winners were...um...them! (That is, their theatre company.) So I guess this year they are opening it up to the general public. Must.Write.Quickly. :)

Well, with a final push here on the last day I managed to get up to 30 submissions!!!  Thanks to everyone for sharing some great opportunities; I found those _very_ helpful and they served as my primary source of opps.  I'm especially glad to have gotten my 10-minute play out to several places (including a few in my neck of the woods) and am hoping for a bite somewhere on that.  I look forward to hearing what results people have from the spree!

I just heard back from a director from one of the spree submissions!

Here's the problem: she liked my play (or, at least, my synopsis--I don't know if she read the play), but wants to see a full-length script.  I have only written one-acts, running up to 30 minutes.  Do you think I try to piece something together, and, if so, how?

Nina Nina: a couple of possibilities suggest themselves: 1.) Tell the truth, say you've never written a full length play before but would like to develop the one you sent them into one. Elaborate on this by listing some ways you believe the play could be enhanced if expanded. 2.) Send them several of your short one acts and say that they could consititute a full-evening's bill if desired but that you don't have any full-length plays for their consideration at the present time. (Then get busy on one.)

Last day already?  I looked everywhere this weekend and there was just nothing appropriate to go anywhere - so I was finished after my 17th submission (goal was 20).  But after 68 during the last binge and an extra 17 - I just may be getting this marketing down.  I am writing something for:  Boston Public Schools (written - needs work), One Shoe Festival and Asphalt Shorts.  So the submissions will continue.  My goal was: 200 for 2006 (I am at 168).  I usually submit about 30/year.  It was grand getting to know you and listening to your titles and plots and hints.  Thanks to all and especiall Edd.  I will be gone for two weeks during the next submission spree - but may join in for the other two to make sure I don't lose the steps I've taken!  Thanks again.  May the end of the year bring all of you all good things.

Since joining TPF three weeks ago I've made sixteen submissions. For the year that brings me to around 60. So, I'm going strong. But I can hardly wait for the first request for me to sign a contract or give permission for a workshop or staged reading. I've only been submitting for a little over a year and I know that theatre's sometimes hold onto scripts seemingly forever, still.........

Thanks so much for the advice--it honestly had not occurred to me to tell the truth!

I, too, greatly appreciate Edd and all participants for keeping the energy going during this spree.  It compelled me to finish a piece, write a piece, and polish my cover letters.

An interesting opp. on NYC Craigslist:

Librettist a/o Lyricist
