I just joined TCG and I was going through the catalogue, circling items I would love to get and realized that I knew maybe 1/32 of the playwrights in there. What playwrights are you into? What playwrights are just not your thing?

I ask this becauae I am a bit of a latecomer to the whole playwright thing and I've only been seriously delving into reading plays for the last five years.

Thanks!

For reasons of my own, I don't as a rule read contemporary playwrights, other than the oldies still hanging on to dear life.  However, there is a contemporary playwright I'm pretty excited about -- Tracy Letts.  He got my attention with "Bug."

Orton, Williams, Albee, Shafer. Guare, Peter Weiss, Peter Barnes, O'Neill and a whole mess of dead writers are my favorites.

I got 'August: Osage County' and it's amazing. I have 'Bug' somewhere, but I don't know where at the moment.

Thanks for your input. I will definitely check out your list of playwrights...and find 'Bug'.

Current or recent: Peter Barnes by a distance, George Tabori, David Mercer (that's three  who are no longer with us), John Arden, Christopher Hampton, John Guare.

Historically, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton, Pedro Calderon de la Barca, Elmer Rice, Nikolai Gogol, Mikhail Bulgakov--not crazy about these lists, because I'm always certain I'm leaving somebody crucial out, and in this case I'm doubly certain of it, but I'll stop here.

My favourite play title of all time: "A Mad World, My Masters": Thomas Middleton.

Sara Ruhl, Adam Bock, Caridad Svich (who has a new translation of Lorca's work), Octavio Solis, Lynne Alvarez, and Anne Marie Healy (who has a play in the collection put together by Clubbed Thumb Theatre -- as does Adam Bock) are some who come to mind.  I also loved Adam Rapp's NOCTURN.

Also -- reading Sara Kane (whose full works are avilable as a collection) changed the way I write plays.  Her bald, bold truth/strorytelling still gives be the shivers.  She demonstrates how to be unflinching and brave.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Kane

Reading (and meeting) August Wilson taught me how to bring poetry into my work.

I am smitten with the work of Federico Garcia Lorca.

He's not contemporay -- but he has been a great influence on many of the writers curremtly working.  I believe Nilo Cruz said something to the effect of, "It all begins with Lorca."  I encourage everyone to read his plays and poetry.  He is AMAZING.  And there are new translations of his work being composed every few years.  He's very hot right now.

In addition to a lot of the writers already mentioned, I love: Caryl Churchill, David Lindsay-Abaire, Lynn Nottage, Jordan Harrison, Sheila Callaghan, and Naomi Iizuka.

I'm a fan of the classics. I'm attracted to work that is poetic, absurd or where characters under go a dramatic transformation over the course of the play. I like Brecht, Pirandello, Ibsen, Tennessee Williams, Beckett and Euripides. Interesting that the Bard hasn't made it onto anyone's list yet.
