Received word recently that my mystery play "Ace of Diamonds" has been picked up by Big Dog Plays. I've heard good things from a couple of other playwrights with them, and so I'm excited to see what they'll do with the piece.
They're relatively new, but I thought I'd give them a try. Royalty split is 50/50, but I think more important than the split is how they do as far as getting productions.
And while I've only just signed the contract with them, I already have good feelings about them: right after signing the contract I had an email from someone who found this same play through my website and wanted to do it. So I passed it along to the editor at Big Dog to see how she wanted to handle it, and her response was since the play isn't officially out yet she "didn't feel right taking a cut of the royalties" and gave it back to me to handle as I wished. Now while in this case it was pretty clear that the theater had found the play through my website and not through Big Dogs, how often does a publisher turn down money that they're entitled to?
