The first airing of my cheerfully evil political piece, originally titled 'Putting the Fun Back Into School Shootings' - but retitled 'The Normal Sounds of Architecture' - gets its premiere on July 3rd at the Garioch Theatre Festival in the UK, in their 'New Work' section.

Apparently this initial showing is to let potential sponsors (including some Arts Councils) have a look at it. There's going to be further showings and eventually a proper solid run. For now though, this is for possible sponsors and to see the effect of the piece in performance, on an audience. (Wish I could be there, darn it.)
For myself, despite the earlier angst over the name change, looking at the titles on offer at this little fest, I've realized that my original title was probably the best - as it was totally eye-catching, nicely offensive, and guaranteed to ruffle feathers, which is often a good thing.
Speaking with the Theatre group about them taking it to the Edinburgh Fest next year, which they're keen on. Groovy baby, yeah!
There's also other possible play production news, but until things're signed and sealed...

| I like the first title better. I guess they just didn't want to put that up on the marquee eh?

ian,
I loved the first title as well and you know I did what I could for ya here in America! I championed it to the best of my abilities.
But the second title is good as well, and if the word gets around about the your wonderful play, I hope others will have the insight to appreciate it as much as I did!
Let us know how it goes. I am just happy a theatre has the taste and insight to do it!!!
best,

A just reward, no matter what title. If memory serves me correctly, you have been working toward this for a long time.
Good luck w/it.

P.S.
You can always change the title back to the original after this production.

Thanks all for the kind words and positive thoughts - even though I'm naturally hoping for a howling, outraged mob to erupt from the theatre, after the show, burning random houses in this sleepy-looking Scots town, and a lynch mob to then form, comprised of Outraged Citizens desperate to string all concerned, from the nearest steeple.
But that's just me :)
I do get the feeling though, that the Theatre company folks can also feel the impish need for the original title to return, so that regardless of where the play is done, its causing havoc and mayhem from the start, before the play even begins.
So I'm pretty sure that the original title will return... no solid bites or sniffs from any theatres in the US though...(although looking at plotlines in the latest New Yorker for new and current NY plays, I'm not surprised, almost everything's mostly of the 'TV movie of the week' story genre IMO)
Using the imminent preview as a personal excuse to be targeting lots of UK publishers with Ye Olde Query Letter, and ditto for UK Theatre companies - had some requests for scripts already, so its a dice roll in the hands of Fate.
Its always good to use every positive opportunity, to try spawn further additional opportunities - rather than just treating the good news as an end in itself. So my query letter stats and sample-sends have gone up in a big way over the last week or so - probably in the area of 30+ emails a day heading UK-wards...
I think the 'school shootings' preview is July 3rd - so I'm keeping an eye out on local newspapers for responses/reactions - and will cut n paste - especially if there's anything wonderfully horrified/disgusted/outraged etc :)
