Babies smell certain men
and wail

later they are smothered
by elephant ears

or sperm whales, beached
or amok in shallow pods

upriver or downriver,
it matters not

Some live in one-bed apartments
and neighbors complain they dance
nude

wearing catchers’ mitts or football
helmets

Others live above with the moon
and a straw for their beer
using the empty bottles
as wind chimes

Years from now, their building
will crumble and a monument
will be erected by all their women
with this inscription:

“Those were the words I was looking for"
