He wanted to salvage
the poem, the one
about aches and love
instead he stood near where
the elm tree was, remembering
its leaves falling, one by one
He remembered it being
taken down in 1976,
after slowing trying to defend
itself by shedding
He remembered talking
to his mother under the elm;
she telling him how dashing
his father appeared when
they first met in 1950
He wishes he could have known
them when they first met, to warn
them the elm tree would die,
after all the aches and the love
had ceased for the two of them
He would have written a poem,
telling them if they promised
to not tell him all their aches,
he would not tell them his.
