Mana:
even whole numbers
can’t explain my father
aging faster than stale
air (he a desk chair
in an unused office

his repetition of stories,
his funny hat tilted in
yellow wind

we stop for ice cream,
stare at a “For Sale” sign
across the divided highway

i ask him for the mantle
clock i had re-geared
for their 25th anniversary

a light steel glance,
“i don’t know where the key is,
haven’t wound the damn thing
since mother died”

our ride home
is like a collapsed bridge
i notice my fingerprints
on the steering wheel,
his gray eyes watching me

toward evening, we cross the Mississippi
where a lone boat steams
in cold water

and i wonder if it is still possible
to navigate by stars
