Not really facing a ten
rifle firing squad—

except maybe my wife—

there I was smoking
my last cigarette—

without a blindfold—

at around eleven pm
on a cloudless night
at the driveway end

After two hundred thirty
five thousand tiny furnaces
and thirty-five years of puff,
I thought about one last After
Sex cigarette, an After White
Wine cigarette, a last Hazelnut
Coffee cigarette, A-last-line
of-the-poem-out the door-
to-Smoke-one-last cigarette

and threw that heater as far
as I could out into the street,
its blaze red cone end tumbling
like a beacon of hope to my lungs,
both probably charred beyond
recognition from forty years of flame

Serious withdrawal symptoms
commenced at once: itchy palms,
reddish depressed tongue, breath
a quickened pace, dilated eyes

It was as if I had tossed the Marlboro
Man himself over the side of a boat;

As I watched the coal subside, I swear
I heard a Fat Lady somewhere behind
me singing Mozart’s “Requiem”

Even the rabbits wept
