The Little Things

I wish I had more time
to notice the little things:
quarter moons, soft skin
on pears, thirst, images
in rear view mirrors, tears
at a funeral, sweet pickles,
puckered rosebuds opening
on a warm summer morning

Big things are rarely overlooked:
wars, a friend’s death, the birth
of my first son, the I-35 bridge
that collapsed in 2007,
those folks whose names
I didn’t know who suffered
because of someone else’s
negligence over the years

I remember father leaning
close to my ear when I was ten
and whispering that he loved mother
even more when she reached up over
the sink to put the fruit glasses away

At the time I thought it was a crazy
and little thing to notice about a wife;
yet I never asked him later if he thought
the same way when mother lay in a hospital
bed, a ventilator wooshing her breath away,
idle arms at her side like dead branches
