When I heard you died,
I paused and thought of my dad
and the two of us in the fairway
on the par 5 at Lake Hallie in 1968,
near the soft woods. All the birds,
the deep beds of pine needles.

Everything, really.

One of your breaths contained
all the swings a player ever needs.
