i work for a theater company and have written a play. the president of the company claims that every line should have a number on it.
i say no it shouldn't due to its hard to read. i have the play numbered by role so when directing i can refer back to a role's line.
is he right or wrong.
thanks

he says that every line in the script should have a number. so if you have a 9 page script, you have each line on each page numbered. so you would have 1-225. let try and give you an idea. i'm just gonna start here.
100: Charles
101: (yellling)
102: what did you think you were doing with the car. you
103: could have killed yourself. you don't drink and
104: drive or text people what you are doing. that is so
105: dumb. don't you ever do that again.
106: Son
107: (feeling sad)
108: i won't daddy. not ever again.
109: Sandy
110: (hugging son)
111: it's ok it's ok.
now, from what i researched, you don't even number line in a stageplay. the other think is, he says Shakespeare did this. from what i have seen, shakesspeare only number here and there, not every line. advice please?

ASK him why? I have no idea what this is all about. My first response is NONSENSE. Oops....my second response is also nonsense. For whatever reason he thinks this necessary, is not the job, nope, no way, no how, of the playwright. Too bad ya can't shoot stupid! Join the Dramatist Guild. It just occurred to me that he is thinking of the Bible, or Shakespeare, or, god forbid, an academic!
