Submission Deadline: PLAYMAKERS THEATRE “SHORTS!” FALL FESTIVAL
Once again, the Playmakers Theatre of Hamden, Connecticut, is seeking brand new, never-before-performed ten-minute themed plays for a staged reading at the Thornton Wilder Auditorium located in Hamden’s Miller Library.
A FIRST PRIZE award of $75.00, a SECOND PRIZE award of $25.00 and a THIRD PRIZE award of honorable mention given in recognition of the three most outstanding plays of the six or seven scripts selected for a public staged reading on Friday evening, December 3, 2010.
New and emerging playwrights are welcome to submit new play scripts of ten minutes length (or less). Connecticut residents, including High School and College students, along with older novices and seasoned playwrights, are encouraged to submit their work. Each playwright will have the opportunity to attend the first-night rehearsal, at which time will meet the director and actors. The development of the script and the ultimate performance potential of the work will be a participatory, collaborative process.
Ten-minute plays submitted for consideration should reflect the guiding focus suggested by two Wilder quotations:
“Every good thing in the world stands on the razor edge of danger.”
“A dramatist is one who believes that the pure event, an action involving human beings, is more arresting than any comment that can be made upon it.”
These quotations are not meant to restrict subject matter or style. Rather, the designated theme is intended to provide an inspirational “point of departure,” capturing the spirit and dramatic pulse that infuse Wilder’s finest work. In other words, good, great drama raises the stakes, the ‘everyday’ to the ‘out of the ordinary.’ We all suffer broken hearts. What makes your story’s stakes higher than every other broken heart one throughout the universe?
The deadline for submissions is November 1, 2010. Plays must be in Standard Play Format, such as the one found at http://www.chameleontheatre.org.
Playscripts should be submitted as an email attachment to: email@example.com only.
Best of Luck!
