I recently discovered Stageplays’ option to publish your work via their Cyberpress imprint. After doing a little research and considering the pros and cons, I decided I had little to lose by giving it a try.

I’ve consequently just published my collection of comedic 10-minute plays “The Meta Plays”. Individually, a number of these plays have had very successful productions in various parts of the world, winning awards and plaudits from critics, with some receiving publication in short play anthologies and educational text books. Despite this, I hadn’t been able to get any of the major traditional theatre publishers to commit to publishing the complete collection.

This I found rather baffling, as the commercial potential of the collection seemed quite evident. It can be performed by as few as 4 actors or as many as 18 (large cast options always being attractive to colleges and community theatres), all with very minimal set and prop requirements. Moreover, many of the roles can be played by male or female actors, of all ethnicities and all ages. But, try as I might, I couldn’t get them to bite. So I decided it was time to take things into my own hands.

The process itself couldn’t be easier. The publication guide they send you explains everything you need to prepare prior to uploading it into their database, and since you can directly upload your work as either a Word or PDF file, there are no painfully tedious and time consuming formatting issues to confront.

Then, as promised, in about a week the play went live. It couldn’t have been easier. Furthermore, any questions or concerns I had were promptly and kindly addressed by the Stageplays staff.

Here’s the link to its page on the site if you’re interested in taking a look:

So now…I’ll just have to wait and see whether or not that commercial potential I originally saw in this play collection will come to fruition. Stay tuned…

Andrew
