A friend remarked upon a time
that the trouble with poets and vagabonds
is we use no facts and figures

If accountants wrote poetry
every rhyme would have a couplet
All the syllables would balance

There would as many stanzas going out
as metaphors coming in
The paperwork for the verse
Made present and correct

the percentage of simile would match the national standard.

that's all very well and true I told him

But if poets did accountancy
I would drive a Mercedes
The economy would be polka-dot
Houses cheap as penny sweets, with twice the E numbers
And beautiful women would ask us to dinner

Because people don't read balanced books
