Fifty two means nothing, sometimes
you mean nothing but say something
anyway like fuck it but don’t mean it

from one nothing to another you don’t
know cold, you move as though

there will someday be a destination: soft arms,
a warm embrace, haunted by a fragrance, numbness

when you try and remember what it was like
back in the day it was nothing so it must be

there are times when you tell yourself
you’re not too old, and you struggle to prove:

you drink too much, pray more, notice longer hair
spend more time, alone, looking in a mirror

You decide you won’t disappear, will you,
you’ll keep your eyes open, detail
will appear, slowly, continued frustration,
bits of fear, more nothingness taken away
by an impulsive lick of a shoulder

a good woman can still give you the world;
see, sometimes it’s just an echo

Only you can decide if it was nothing or not
