Kuma Kahua Theatre Playwriting Contest (Honolulu, HI) – Non-profit theatre company affiliated with the University of Hawai’i seeks original works of special relevance to the people of Hawai’i. They have a strong commitment to producing the works of local playwrights, but are open to works that pertain to Hawai’i written by non-residents. Plays must be unproduced. No adaptations. Individuals may submit more than one play, but each must be submitted under a different pen name.
Submit in one of the following categories: The Hawai’i Prize ($600 cash prize for a full-length play (minimum 50 pages); must be set in Hawai’i or deal with some aspect of the Hawai’i experience, i.e. pre-colonial life in the islands, relations between indigenous people and colonizers, the coming of whalers, missionaries and merchants, labor history, militarization, the move toward statehood, tourism, contemporary immigration and diaspora, women’s rights, etc.), The Pacific Rim Prize ($450 for a full-length play (minimum 50 pages); must be set in or deal with the Pacific Islands, the Pacific Rim, or the Pacific/Asian American experience), and The Resident Prize ($250; open to residents of Hawai’i at time of submission; any topic, any length).
Send 3 copies of your play typed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only.
Include a cover page with title, pen name, and division in which the play is being entered.
Your name should not appear on the script.
Include an ordinary envelope containing a piece of paper with the following information: play title and pen name, playwright’s real name, social security number, address and phone number, and competition division.
Seal the envelope and write the play title on the outside. NOTE: No e-mail submissions.
