Sitting in a booth
at an all-nite diner
I feel cleaner
than the spoon
I use to stir hard sugar
into my French roast
Outside, a cab pulls
itself against the curb;
two people exit
each rear door, one
street side
They do not see me
but I stare anyway
I imagine their discourse:
not with you, please,
not now, not even soon,
not even after you sip
the milk or return
the creamy gardenia
The man in the gray overcoat
waves limply to the woman,
disappears to my left, his steps
pointy, like a compass
The woman poses
as if in a black-and-white
photograph; grainy, as if
at any moment—
not another picture
will ever be taken—
not another person
will ever see her pain
at least until another
anonymous woman is left
by an anonymous man
with only one
anonymous
onlooker as proofLast edited on Tue Feb 9th, 2010 10:58 pm by timmy

timmy,
This reads with the depth of tone of an Edward Hopper painting! You have put Hopper into words for me.
best,

Hopper has always been a favorite of mine.
Thank you for the compliment.

ps: I took out one line of the poem. I read this for the first time and stumbled on it :)

timmy,
Hmmmm.
Putting Hopper into words.
Ran across this review today of a show in Chicago.

Terrific article.
Terrific idea for a play. Looks like someone beat me to it.
