I’m back at the house on Daniels Avenue
and my dead father is there in his usual
far chair of the dining table

He smiles when I enter and tells me
he’s been waiting for hours; when I start
to protest this isn’t the dream I’m supposed
to be having at this point in my life

father raises his hand to silence me
like he used to when I was ten, smiles
and says, “Let’s eat first, then we can talk”

and my mother appears out of nowhere
and father asks her to serve whatever
she has ready and she leaves
and my father gazes at me and says,

“Don’t worry, Mother has always served us
in our time of need”

I am thinking that, for some reason, I should
stay where I am and see what he wants
to talk about...tonight I may not
wish to wake too soon
