i may have my first paid commission!

i've received an email from a director who has directed two of my plays in the past and who would like me to write a piece for him to direct this summer. i have no idea what to ask for money-wise. i'm waiting for details but i know it is for young performers and have a feeling that it will be 60 minutes in length, not sure on number of performances or size of the house, price of admission.

dramatist guild could probably answer my questions but i'm not a member - the fee is a bit steep for me. (perhaps i'll join if i get this commission!) anyone here have any advice/info?

ps. i do realize i should get everything written up in a contract. hmmm...maybe i should join the guild...

spiny,

The yearly associate membership to DGA is $90 per year. That is about 25 cents a day.

I think it is well-worth it. Hope you join.

Congratulations.

best,

I wrote a full-length play for a middle school group.  Originally, I asked for $500.00, I think, but the teacher actually said that's way too low (she was a musician and said she had experience with writing commissioned work).  I think we settled on something around $1200.00.  So, for a one-hour show, I would think around $800.00 would be good.

Good Luck!

Alan

wow - really?

perhaps i should've specified that it's an amateur group - i'm sure that's way out of their range. i was hoping for a couple of hundred. we'll see.

but thanks for your thoughts!
