It was within that instant
when everything you'd worked for
was deemed
last
you'd stand beside the winner
hands clasped tightly
around her medal
and you'd know
you'd feel it then
because there's nothing more
stark

than the consumption of
defeat
coiling around you;
nothing to blame
besides your own
nervous disposition
where is there to hide?
beside beneath your father's
arm
who left
so many months ago
your failure
an ominous sign
to him
and
the world
