Mana:
Can you ever remember
a time when you didn’t exist?
and even when you tried,
nothing made sense; not the rub
of her bare arm after undressing her;
her patience almost vertical, you held
all her secrets in your hands;
not the funny way she tilted her head
toward what you said, lips down,
eyes looking up under her lashes

All this before the brittleness,
the tenuous frequency
of inactivity; all this before
she groped your face
to feel your skeletal smile
for the last time
