Mana:
She told me
any night is old
and knows every
memory a mind
has to hide;
it has no shadows
of its own

Walking at night is fine,
she said, but watch out
for moon burn; it’s not
a hot burn and you don’t
know you have one
‘till your skin sheds

When I didn’t respond
she added that shadows
burn also; they just
take a little longer
to heal

We spent the rest
of our time together
that summer touching
each other’s scars
