I'd like to ask, what was your first production like? What was your play about? How did the audience like it? How was your relationship with the director and actors? How much of a hands-on approach did you take? What did the reviewer say? What things about the production did you like? What drove you nuts?
At this point I have sixteen plays published and have probably had a hundred or so productions, yet I have never seen one of my plays directed by someone else.
I hope that happens one day. Of course I've seen productions stills, but it's not the same.
What I remember is that parts of my play were wonderful, truly magical and truly touching. I also remember that the director got some remarkable work out of the three student actors who were in the production.
I also remember that the director dropped the ball on about all of the other aspects of the production. It was a nightmare.
I did learn some important things about my play, and I did get to do some rewrites before we opened.
