why we tell our children
cupping a seashell
you can still
hear the ocean…
some say it’s the surging
of blood,
as it circulates
through the body.
others still,
mark the wind,
no matter how tight
you clinch
it’s always there…
as a boy
it was the nascent, inchoate
belief
that something empty,
spiral,
could at the very least,
capture the echo
of something as unfathomable
as the sea.
