THAT 5'5" BUNDLE OF DYNAMITE...
HELLO EVERYONE MY NAME IS ALEX, WHAT'S YOURS? (watching Gypsy as I write this, haha)
So, my name is Nader (but I go by "Alex") Valian. I am twenty-three years old and from Northern Virginia and very excited to be joining the playwrights forum. Ever since I can remember, I've loved theater, music, film, and literature. I grew up with musical theater and Turner Classic Movies. I got into theater myself when I was in the sixth grade but it wasn't until I was in ninth grade that I decided to become a playwright. My senior year of high school, I had my first play produced at the Warehouse Theatre in D.C. I soon majored in theater (with a concentration in playwriting and dramaturgical studies) and minored in english (with a concentration in film and media studies) at George Mason University. My mentor was Heather McDonald (Rivers and Ravines; Dreams of a Common Language; An Almost Holy Picture). I graduated in December and am now pursuing my M.A. in English at George Mason. I plan to get my second degree in playwriting in New York once I become certified in teaching. It is my dream to be a college professor and professional playwright.
My greatest influences in playwriting include Sarah Kane, Martin McDonagh, Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, Christopher Durang, David Lindsay-Abaire, Neil LaBute, David Mamet, Alfred Jarry, August Strindberg, Tom Stoppard, but most of all- Edward Albee and Harold Pinter.
My writing is mainly concentrated in black comedies, tragicomedies, and theater of the absurd. I also write musicals.
You'll find many of your kin here among us. Writers, and lovers of theatre all. Take a look around, comment, critique, postulate, and hypothesize, but above all, enjoy yourself and partake in what we have to offer. And we will reciprocate what you have to offer as well. It is a wonderful place, full of inspiration, where I'm sure you'll find a home. Welcome.
