It’s been so cold lately I half expect
Houdini himself to drop handcuffed
through a small hole in the thick ice
of East Side Lake here in Minnesota

I would love to push snow into a pile
and live in it again, like we used to,
the boys and I, dipping deep beneath
the cold, so cold our foreheads ached;
such a pair, those two, almost gone now,
pushed away with age, other snows

Listen, no one will tell you this
but me: the coldness of night is only
a matter of time, this slow growth
of winter, with its nameless stars
and countless confessions, goose
bumps riding the orbit of one’s skin

We all wait for a voice to speak to us,
open the last door for us; the night-cold
air exiting mouth and lungs before
even Harry can wriggle out of his bonds,
re-trace his way back to the surface
through the only hole in our frozen lake

What a great poem to wake up to with frothed coffee, looking at the snow outside, still clinging for life to the evergreens, and the large icicles desperately grabbing at the gutters, fruitlessly hoping not to fall and crash broken onto the ground with the inevitable thaw to come.

Filled with senses, filled with wonder and awe, loss and…

Beautiful, timmy.
