HI

I am a new playwright. I have written one One Act play which runs to about 80 minutes, two 15 minute plays and a few monologues.

Most of these have a theme of mental health. Should I spend a few hours just going through the internet trying to get as much attention as possible?

especially with Mental Health theatre companies? I am working with someone from Stepping Out Theatre in Bristol, who is mentoring my writing?

Should i just run it by him what I am thinking of doing? I have had one 5 minute monologue performed and a 15 minute play going to a rehearsed reading stage with Stepping Out in Bristol.

Should I just go all holds barred and send my stuff out all over the world?
Does that make one look a bit stupid? Or is that just how one does it?

Sorry if it is a basic question, but I've been working on writing almost a year and a half and I think I need to know more about this side of things.

Of course I will talk to my mentor, but any advice before that would be great!

It's a good question. And best answered by yourself. YES to all your questions and NO to it making you look stupid. What might well be to your disadvantage might be not doing those things. Build yourself a free YOLA website. They're the best I know. DON'T WORRY ABOUT PUSHING YOURSELF ON THE WORLD IF IT MIGHT GET YOU A PRODUCTION. We have lots of listings right here on the Stageplays site. Paddy will help you by posting opportunities. Paddy, in media res, Kato and others will have great advice for you. BTW an 80 minute play is the minimum for a full-length---that is my best opinion. Other than that, FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS. YOU SEEM TO ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS. Marketing is the most difficult thing you might do. For me, writing a play is far easier than getting it out there. Most theatres take emailed scripts. What could possibly be better than that? Get them produced. ANYWHERE. BUILD A RESUME. Okay, wait and you'll get good to great responses. Better than mine. Marketing is the shitty side of playwriting. HEY, I just thought of something that will benefit you greatly. You do know that Stageplays is also a publishing company. I just made 6K from my exposure on Stageplays. Find out about publishing with Stageplays. You maintain all rights. Other than all my rambling make sure you listen to Paddy, in media res and Kato. They know far more than I in this regard because I'm busy trying to take over the world. :)

Hi Edd,
Thanks for the speedy response.
What do you think the main reasons for you earning 6K from this publishing? You have a pretty good coverage on this website I would think being who you are here? I'm not the best social networker. Isnt it things like that that would get me Coverage?
How much have other people here published on here made in general? What is it based on, the merits of the work or the social networking?
I do have all the time in the world and can change my very annoying chat habit to networking in other ways I'm sure :)
Kato Is great he invited me to write a five minute monologue for the Christmas show they did At second step players.
I think I should finish my full length before sending anything out because otherwise it's just a couple of 15 minute plays and a monologue or 2.
If I give them my full length they will have a selection at least and it will save time emailing them a second time. Other than that I am entering small competitions with whatever is appropriate so far.

Oh yeah, I wanted to ask how much is is published here? I'll have a look around the website.

Edd, sorry to confuse I seem to have 2 accounts. one on my phone and one on my computer I have lost all knowledge of email addresses i'm linked with (i have too many) and passwords (I have too many) I think I got confused earlier thinking you were Edd like editor... lol sorry for the confusion

I can see what you mean best answered by myself as well :)

I need to format everything perfectly first, and not give up writing for networking too soon!

I have found getting a read through a real pinnacle, leaving me thinking ok, what shall I do now? I need to get the hungry feeling back.

PASSION. Not hunger. I used to be a moderator and still am in a very limited sense. My work is too time-consuming to monitor with the attention this Forum deserves. But you did get one of the right folks. I'm still pretty smart. LOL
