I'm new to the whole aspect of production relating to theatre & have been assigned a project by a professor of mine.

It's quite exciting to learn about theatre as an art.

My question since I would like to get ahead of class is who makes up a stage crew? How can I know the average pay that each member expects as I'd like to learn about production later on in life.

Do you also think that projectors are becoming the trend in theatre, something like digital drama to be very crucial in the future?

All answers are appreciated. Thank you! :)

Hi, Joe.

Multi-media productions are definitely becoming more popular....as this is a question that's a based on observation.

I think the rest of the questions you could research, as that's part of the process.

Welcome.

Paddy

Here is the website homepage for IATSE, the national union for stagehands and movie crews. http://iatse.net

You can find most of what you need to know about "the bidness" side here. Search through it.

If you see at the top of the site, you will see “Local Unions.” Find the one in your area and give them a call or send an e-mail. Tell them you are doing a research project for your class and could you talk to someone if they have the time. They might have a packet they can send you.

Search through the website. It has pay levels, etc. There are many many aspects to stagecraft jobs and scenic/lighting/costume design and Various stage-crew positions.

Here is the Young Workers Committee page.

There are many books written about stagecraft. You most likely have access to them at your school. Read it. Buy one. Or two. Mark it up/underline it. Make notes.

Here is also The United Scenic Artists union site. https://www.usa829.org

Two of my lifelong friends are professional Scenic Designers. Both are successful and near the top of their fields. We started out together in a small Community Theatre. They worked their way up from the very bottom.

Best,

IMR

P.S.

One of the guys I mentioned above gave the best theatrical advice to a Playwright I have ever heard.

One late night, we were all working on putting a set together in a little storefront we took a lease on. A nice fellow knocked and came through the door and said, "So, this is really a theatre?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I'm a playwright."

(PAUSE.)

"Well...grab a hammer!"
