Recently I received an offer to publish from a relatively new digital play publisher. The company also offers a self-publish feature similar to Stageplays, but this was not a self-publish offer.
I am trying to put myself in the place of that director beginning the process of finding a play. Other than the usual publishing houses that send out catalogs on an annual basis, how does one actually find a publisher whose presence is only online? Even in this environment of social media, do publishers who exclusively offer scripts digitally have much of a consumer awareness?
I think it just comes down to how high an online play publisher’s website is ranked among the major search engines. If a search for say “stage plays” or “full-length plays” finds that publisher’s site showing up on page 45 of a Google (for instance) search, then it probably isn’t going to generate a lot of sales since most people aren’t going to wade that deep or devote that much time to their search.
That said, just because a site isn’t ranking very high now doesn’t mean it won’t in 6 months or a year from now. Also, people are often very specific in their search terms, so if your play happens to have key words attached to it that relate to a given search, your play could still come up on their radar even if the site itself isn’t ranked very high.
I get quite a healthy amount of traffic to my website from people looking for one-act and full-length plays, so there’s definitely a good market segment that’s open to searching online for plays to produce, and not just at the big players sites.
The bottom line is, the more exposure your plays have the more chances you have of finding productions for them, so assuming that it’s a non-exclusive offer and the terms are decent, I’d say you don’t have anything to lose.
