I am fairly new to playwriting. All of the plays I have women as the lead. I co-own a production company with my husband and we produce the plays I have written and other events. Here is the problem: He asks and makes other comments about all of my plays having female leads. He wants to know if all of my plays will have female leads. The way he asks I know he wants me to write some with a male lead. Right now, I just don't want to!!! It's not that I have anything against creating a piece with a male lead, I just don't have that story in me right now. It's getting annoying. I don't want to start a fight with him over this. I want to write what I want to write whenever or whatever story is put on my heart. I envision him being petty about it. What should I do? I want to tell him so bad that if he wants a story with a male lead then he should write it! But I know that's not going to happen because I'm the writer and he is not.

My first thought - tell him to write the play himself.

I would have advised you on every single point you've made here. You already know. Print off what you said and read it to him.

In a world where the 16% of the plays produced are by women, resulting in a lot of plays with lead roles for men...not exclusively - but you know what I mean.

I would have told your to only write the story you want to tell.
I would have said he should write his own play and stop bugging you.

So it's not about you needing advice. You already have the advice you're looking for. What you need is to be strong, and tell that man exactly what you wrote here.

You should be afraid of being honest with your spouse.

My two sense.

Welcome.

Paddy

Thank you, Paddy. I just have to work on HOW to state my thoughts.

Paddy,

I think you meant "should NOT be afraid..."

Best,
