Hi everyone, I've recently been rechomped by the play bug and I can't decide what I should do so i looked for a place online I could ask other humans questions about playwrighting.
the big one I want to ask is how much do you guys/gals compromise in writing plays? for example the play I'm currently writing calls for 2 sherman tanks and a tyrannosaurus rex. I know this wouldn't be easy to accomplish in a stage setting, but the thought of ruining a joke for some dumb fucking director kills me.
The next question is how do you know when your writing is taking you too far? I am a middle aged man with a career and no real aspirations to become rich/famous/produced/acknowledged but I feel like dying sometimes because I'm not writing so much. Am I alone in this?
How do you guys keep writing without any validation? Should I change my style of writing to be more director/theater friendly?
Anyway, I'd love to hear from other people about their struggles and triumphs. Sometimes writing can be lonely.

2 sherman tanks and a tyrannosaurus rex?

Sign me up!!

You are THINKING TOO literally.

ANYTHING can happen in Theatre.

(Unless you are totally bullshitting all of us.)

Shaskespeare Henry V, The CHORUS: "THINK when we talk of horses that you SEE them,PRINTING their proud heels into the receiving earth."

This IS exactly the same thing you are talking about.

Look, it all depends on the Story. Onstage, a Tricycle can be a Dinasour.

The actors will ACT and giver personality to the Tank or the Reptile.

Read a lot more plays than you most likely have. Hundreds of them. You will feel better. You learn by reading "The Masters."

Continue to use your imagination and don't stop.

best,

IMR.

Where did you disappear to?

Don't you realize I was giving you great encouragement?

Best,
