Mana:
When a bird sings full of rainwater
and tries to breath through a pond—
this is how mother sounded
the night she died

open, yet discontinuous

one blue eye opened
when I touched her arm or stroked
her forehead. She didn’t eat or talk
or know it was spring, the same way
a deaf woman didn’t know birds chirped

There was a lake inside her; it rose up
through her asthmatic lungs

she drowned

inch-
by-inch
