Father used to move his hands
across my wall, tip them forward,
as if a lion was pouncing or bend
them forward to make a peacock bow,
the thumb of the right hand bent,
straight ~ bent, straight to make the bird
appear to be eating—

later father’s hands, ever persisting,
moving forward, shaking, trying to eat,
spoon dipping, what do you do after you visit,
after you say hello, and he sits in the same position,
no more shadows moving on his walls—

my own hands do not seem connected to anything
these days, I never initiate handshakes.
