It was the doctor's death
he was young in his thirties
it passed me by

Sitting in the kitchen
my sister
kept on and on it's
Wuhan
was that he's name?
I asked her

Long into the night
over a lot of wine
she went and told me
what was going on

We started washing hands
scrubbing hands
and sanitise
now they are raw
cracks and bleeding
once beautiful hands

girl child had a ticket for the concert
before I could catch her
she was on the bus
into town
going to a concert
not a care in the world

The minister came on television
and told us to wash our hands
and isolate ourselves
for two weeks

Virginia in the village
knew about it since it January
she got her supplies in
and locked her doors
she tracked the airplanes
coming into the country
her sign went up on her front door
no visitors with a sign of a skull to
frighten them away

Word got around
it's not too late
the minister said
we will come together
by staying apart

At first, the nights were long
and cruel
Waking in the early hours
thoughts of bodies
dead in carts
people with sticks banging on my door
stealing my food and cigarettes

The minister came back on
and said wash your hands

The night terrors have gone
the minister has us all calm
we wash our hands
until it's gone
