I read a book that I would like to convert to a stage play. What is the proper way to go about this? Do I first contact the book's author to gain permission? Do I write a few pages or scenes , then contact the author and send the pages along? Is there somewhere to check that this hasn't already been done?

Thanks for any help or ideas you have.

Contact the author via their agent/publisher but unless you can charm them and/or have an impressive track record, you'll probably be refused

This of course doesn't apply to novels out of copyright eg Dickens
